RE: Mark Kevin Dekins
CDC#:  D-01617

Hearing: June 13, 2017

On December 30, 1983, Mark Dekins and Bruce Burns, lured Susan and Max Eakins from their home asking for their help to move Burn’s trailer. At that time, Burns shot Max and Susan as Susan began to run. Burns chased her and shot her again, presuming her to be dead. They threw the bodies in the back of the truck and set out to take them to a grave they had dug the day before. Dekins and Burns left the gravesite and returned 20 minutes later to find that Susan had crawled out of the five feet deep grave after being shot twice. This time they threw her back into the grave, shot her several times and shoveled the dirt over her and her husband’s bodies. Burns admitted they did not know if Susan was actually dead at the time of her burial. After the burial they drove to the Eakins’ Lake Havasu home and looted all of their valuables. Their bodies were found two months later on February 27, 1984.

A letter filed with the California Board of Parole by the case detectives stated, “Each of us has over 30 years experience in law enforcement. Neither of us has seen a more brutal and callous murder. This case defines the term "premeditated.” Dekins was convicted of 2 counts of first degree murder and sentenced to one term of 25 years to life and a second consecutive term of 15 years to life in prison. He will have served only 34 years when he is up for parole.

We, the undersigned STRONGLY OPPOSE parole for Mark Dekins. Justice demands he serve the full prison term given to him at the time he was sentenced for this heinous crime.
