John Banks Shires
29 Years Old

April 16, 1964 to May 5, 1993

John Bank was born and raised in Lewisburg, West Virginia. During his junior year in high school, the family moved to Ocala, Florida. He graduated from high school in Ocala and then attended the Lipscon University in Nashville, Tennessee, with a degree in accounting. He soon became a tax auditor for the state of Florida. He very much enjoyed playing tennis, riding his mountain bicycle and his two dogs, Moose and Buckwheat.

John is very sorely missed by everyone he ever came in contact with. He was a very kind, gracious and loving son, devoted to his family. He was senselessly shot and killed at age 29 over the hijacking of his car. We, his family, mother, father, sister and brother will never get over the loss.

John was shot and killed by Arturo Benedith in Melbourne, Florida on May 5, 1993. Arturo Benedith hijacked John's car. It was a very long 3 years getting Arturo convicted as he ran immediately to New York State. Our State's Attorneys did a wonderful job bringing him back and getting witnesses. Mr. Benedith was also in jail for home invasion he committed while in New York. Mayor Cumo released him back to Florida. He received the death penalty and was on Florida's death row. During one of his many appeals, the Florida Supreme Court reversed the decision to life without parole for 25 years. He still remains in jail. He is a repeat offender and we personally think the entire judicial system needs revamping.
