Alison Leigh. Nelson

25 Years Old

October 13, 1976 to December 13, 2001

Alison was a beautiful 25 year old woman. She had just figured out what her goal in life was. She was to start her graduate program in business. She eventually wanted to open a combination of services for animals, like pet therapy, pet day care, grooming and gourmet treats. Alison was an animal lover who owned two dogs and three cats. Her passion for animals started at a young age. When her friends would come over to play, she always wanted to be the family dog, that's how she convinced us that she really needed a dog. The dog proved to be very therapeutic for Alison. We could hear her behind closed doors pouring her heart out to her beloved friend. Alison had a habit of visiting Humane Society. She frequently convinced family and friends just how much they needed a pet to love. Alison was also active in Kennel clubs and taught puppy obedience classes. Alison was a social worker who was also good at relating to her elderly residents at the two nursing homes she worked at. Her love for the residents and animals led her to start pet therapy programs, bringing in her own animals to visit the residents.

Alison also loved to tell funny stories, especially when it was at the expense of her family. She could capture the room with her contagious laughter and huge smile.

Alison was a compassionate person, she was a thinker. Her friends often seek her out when they had problems, because she was a good listener and not judgmental. Alison loved to read self-help books, anything about animals and poetry. She often wrote poetry as a way of expressing her feelings. Alison's motto in life was, "it's better to be hated for who you are, than to be loved for who you are not."

Alison traveled form Warren, Michigan to Midland, Michigan to attend a Christmas dinner with her former employees from her last job. Her name was never taken off the secrete Santa list. She thought it would be fun, she had not seen her friends since April.

The last time I spoke with Alison was December 12, 2001 at 10:30 p.m. She was back from dinner and staying at her friend Dana's house. Alison was supposed to meet me where I work the following day after her 11:00 a.m. appointment, according to the message left on her answering machine. I called her friend Dana for information, it was so out of character for her to abandon her pets. We were frantic by this time, but we were told we had to wait 24 hours to file a missing person's report.

Five days passed before Alison's locked car was found in Midland; hours later we found out her body was in the back seat of her car. She had been raped and strangled with two contusions to her head.

It turned out that Jackie Mack, Dana's boyfriend was the person who murdered Alison. It took nine months before we went to trial, but justice was served. Jackie Mack was convicted of 1st degree premeditated felony murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole. He resides in Carson City, Michigan Prison.
